Help for Learning Disorders and Learning Disabilities

We have learned so much about learning disorders over the past 30 years.  It is truly exciting to see how much progress has been made in understanding, diagnosing and treating a variety of learning disorders.   I have been helping parents and loved ones in diagnosing and treating learning disorders in their children for many years.

One of the hardest parts of learning disorders for both parents and children is that they can affect the child’s perception (or that of his or her teachers or parents) that the child may be deficient in certain intellectual abilities.  The more we learn about learning disorders, the more we are learning that this is very often not the case.   For example, because a child may have a deficiency in learning spatial concepts (geometry), does not mean that the child is deficient in math in general or that the child cannot learn geometry well – he can but he may need to learn it in a different way.

One of the key insights into learning disorders is the focus on the word “learning.”  A child may need a different way to learn a subject but he or she can still obtain sufficient knowledge about the subject.

There are a number of different types of learning disorders in children.  These can focus on certain types of skills such as reading, writing or math or certain kinds of mental activities such as visual or verbal information processing and short or long term memories.

If you think that your child may have a learning disorder, please call me to set up an appointment.
